Rhododendron and Azaleas

Culture: Our biggest concern is drainage. Neither will live in poorly drained soil. They quickly get a root rot fungus and die. This can include the gardener overwatering. Our Native Rhododendron live quite nicely in shady areas growing on banks or in amongst rocks. Make sure to properly scruff the roots, especially of the finely rooted Azaleas, or the plant won’t begin to root in to the surrounding soil. Lots of organic matter, well-drained soil, and most in part to full shade. Acid soils also necessary.
